What We Fund – Education

We can transform classrooms into hubs of innovation and cultural enrichment by empowering multilingual learners and strengthening the bilingual teacher pipeline.  Our targeted investments in visionary organizations pave the way for a more inclusive, competitive, and united education system across the U.S.

Porque la educación no tiene fronteras.

Our Vision for Education in the U.S.

At the Sullivan Family Charitable Foundation, we envision an education system that is inclusive, innovative, and empowering—one where every learner has the opportunity to thrive regardless of language or background.

We can foster more connected, equitable, and resilient communities by strengthening the educational ecosystem, primarily through support for multilingual learners.

Sin importar el idioma, la educación es un derecho.

Why Focus on Multilingual Learners and the Bilingual Teacher Pipeline?

Ser bilingüe no es un lujo, es una necesidad.

In today’s diverse society, multilingualism is a strength, not a barrier.

The United States is experiencing rapid demographic shifts, with an increasing number of students speaking languages other than English at home.

Más y más estudiantes hablan otro idioma en casa, ¿por qué no en la escuela también?

Despite this growing diversity, many multilingual learners face significant challenges that stem from gaps in our education system, such as:

Limited Access to Quality Programs
Many schools lack robust dual language or bilingual programs, leaving multilingual students without the targeted support they need to fully engage in academic learning.
Insufficient Teacher Training
There is a notable shortage of educators trained to address multilingual learners’ unique needs.  Schools struggle to create inclusive, effective learning environments without a well-prepared bilingual teacher pipeline.
Systemic Educational Disparities
Multilingual learners often contend with lower academic achievement, reduced opportunities for advanced coursework, and less access to enrichment programs than their monolingual peers. These disparities can lead to long-term consequences, including limited college and career prospects.

Broader Societal Impacts

The challenges faced by multilingual learners are not isolated to individual classrooms—they affect communities and the nation as a whole.

When multilingual students are not supported

Economic Growth is Hampered:

A workforce that lacks strong language skills may struggle to compete in a global economy.

Social Cohesion Suffers

Inadequate educational support can increase segregation and diminish cultural understanding.

Innovation is Stifled

A diverse and inclusive educational system fosters creative problem- solving and innovation.

By focusing on both multilingual learners and the bilingual teacher pipeline, our foundation is committed to transforming these challenges into opportunities.

Más maestros bilingües, más oportunidades para todos.

We invest in professional development and innovative dual-language programs to ensure that every multilingual student receives quality instruction. In doing so, we improve individual academic outcomes and contribute to a more competitive, cohesive, and equitable society.

Achieving this vision means a brighter future for the entire nation—one where the strengths of diversity fuel economic prosperity, social integration, and innovative progress por el bien de todos!

What is Possible

When we invest in multilingual learners and build a strong bilingual teacher pipeline, the potential impact reaches beyond individual classrooms.

Juntos, creamos comunidades más fuertes.

Research consistently shows that robust dual language programs can drive significant improvements in academic achievement and long-term economic outcomes:

Academic Gains
Studies indicate that students in bilingual education programs often outperform their peers in reading, math, and critical thinking skills.  Research has found academic improvements within three years for English language learners who complete language acquisition.  These gains help close persistent achievement gaps that have long affected multilingual learners.
Cognitive and Social Benefits

Bilingualism is linked with enhanced cognitive flexibility, problem-solving abilities, and creativity.

Students who become proficient in multiple languages are better equipped to navigate complex tasks and exhibit higher academic and social adaptability levels.

These skills contribute to stronger classroom performance and improved lifelong learning habits.

Economic Impact

A workforce fluent in multiple languages is an invaluable asset in today’s global economy. Research from various economic studies suggests that bilingual individuals can earn 5–20% more than their monolingual counterparts, bolstering economic growth and driving competitiveness on a national scale.

Moreover, cultivating a pipeline of well-prepared bilingual educators lays the foundation for a more innovative and dynamic future workforce.

Social Cohesion and Innovation

Empowering multilingual learners contributes to more inclusive and culturally enriched communities.

When schools provide quality bilingual education, they enhance individual opportunities and foster environments where diverse perspectives lead to creative problem-solving and societal advancement.
